For miner-49ers looking for gold in the northern part of California, Yreka was the gateway to the Klamath River Valley, and a gold field in its own right.
Today I’m driving out of Happy Camp on the Klamath River Highway, also known as highway 96. I’m heading east toward Yreka. This is a trip I’ve taken many times before, as I’ve lived in the Klamath National Forest for the last thirteen years.
Some people think Happy Camp is only a campground, but that is so wrong. It is a real small town in the Klamath River Valley, at the northern edge of California. Another twenty miles, and we’d be in Oregon.
